Born in Kęty in 1923, died in 2016 in Bielsko-Biała; studied at the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1951, 1965–1969) under Prof Fryderyk Pautsch and Prof Juliusz Joniak; member of the Polish Association of Visual Artists since 1969. Long-time lecturer at the Art Faculty in the Cieszyn branch of the University of Silesia in Katowice where he headed the Department of Painting; Distinguished Cultural Activist Badge received from the Minister of Culture; distinction for outstanding artistic achievements in 1996; the “Icarus” Culture and Art Award from the Mayor of Bielsko-Biała in 1997. His creative work focuses on social issues and existentialism. His favourite subjects are people, mainly women, whom he paints with the use of strong almost glaring colours. In the artist’s own words: “Painting is my love, toil and joy. It’s like a woman: mysterious, difficult, demanding and seductive.” The artist has participated in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including “Man and Machine” (1st Prize, Province of Katowice, 1971); “Copernicus-Cosmos” (nationwide exhibition, Toruń, 1972); the “Golden Vine” (Zielona Góra, 1973, distinction); Polish National Exhibition commemorating the 30 years of the People’s Republic of Poland (Warsaw, 1975); International Plein-Air Exhibition in Sosnowiec (1977); the “Sports in Art” Polish National Exhibition (Katowice, 1976); the “Industrial Landscape” post-competition exhibition under the auspices of Prof R. Pomorski (Katowice, 1978); also participated in collective exhibitions organized by the Polish Association of Visual Artists in Vienna (Austria), Moravska Ostrava (Czechoslovakia) and Miskolc (Hungay) in 1975; in Clermont-Ferrand (France) and Kragujevac (Jugoslavia) in 1983; and in the international exhibition “Humour and Satire in Sport” in Ascona Italy) in 1989; the annual “Bielska Jesień” National Painting Competition organized by Galeria Bielska BWA (1972–1978), and in most exhibitions involving artists from the region of Bielsko-Biała. The year 2001 marked a large solo exhibition of his work held in Galeria Bielska BWA. Biedrawa’s work can be found in museum collections in Bielsko-Biała, Chorzów, Cieszyn, Toruń, the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw, also in Galeria Bielska BWA and numerous private collections in England, Greece, Sweden and the USA.
