Kōji Kamoji – born in 1935 in Tokyo, connected to Poland since the 1950s, living in Warsaw. Painter, creator of objects and installations.
After receiving his diploma from the Musashino Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo (1958), he came to Poland (1959) at the urging of his uncle Ryochu Umeda, a historian, poet and translator of Polish literature.
In 1960, he enrolled at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. He earned his diploma in the painting studio of Prof. Artur Nacht-Samborski.
Since 1967 he began a permanent cooperation with the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw. He had his first exhibition in Poland at the Krzysztofory gallery in Cracow (1964, together with Leszek Walicki).
In the 1970s, Koji Kamoji mainly created installations, and later, in parallel, series of paintings. Today, painting is the main form of the artist's activity.
Koji Kamoji has repeatedly represented Polish art at international exhibitions.
He is the winner of the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Critic's Award (1975) and the Jan Cybis Award (2015).
In 2018, the Zachęta National Gallery of Art organized a retrospective exhibition of the artist entitled. 'Silence and the Will to Live', presenting a selection of works created since the 1960s – paintings, drawings and key installations in his oeuvre.
