Gilson Matos began to develop his art skills as a 10-year-old. He made his debut in 1966 with an individual exhibition at the Bienal Nacional de Artes Plasticas da Bania. He obtained a diploma in theology at Universidade Fundamentalista in Sao Paolo in Brazil, where he studied in 1981-1985. He is one of the pioneers of the hare movement in Brazil, which had a great impact on his artistic creation. He creates in the field of painting, drawing, woodcarving and woodcut.
