Audio description

Three horizontal bands of varying width, with the widest at the bottom, and the narrowest in the middle; varying colour tones, from dark splashes of brown at the bottom, through turquoise toned down with dark green in the centre, to gray blues at the top. Various overlapping shades of brown in the lower part reaching up to two-thirds of the total height of the painting – earthy brown through dark sand to brown red above – all interspersed with smudges of light brown. In the centre, slightly to the right is a wide dark brown column with a vertical strip of bright red running through its core and fading out at either end. An observant viewer may discern in the upper half of the column the outline of a seated figure with a bald head lowered towards the viewer. Slightly below the head is a scratched out contour of a leg with a simplified outline of the toes pointing to the left. Above the column, against the turquoise background of the central layer, is a vertical plume of white smoke with a sparse splattering of red. The white smoke is spreading out in the topmost grey blue layer and smudging on the right-hand side. The painting brings to mind a dark vision of a cataclysm brought about by human activity and affecting everything from the brown of the earth, through the azure of the seas, to the blue of the sky. The painting received the Gold Medal, the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art, and the Silver Palette - a special award of the Provincial Council in the 15th National Painting Exhibition "Bielska Jesień '77" organized by Galeria Bielska BWA in Bielsko-Biała.
